Watched a guy at the shop in Dayton grind a 0.030 chamfer by eye and hit it dead on
Stopped by a buddy's shop in Dayton on Saturday and watched his lead hand chamfer some 4140 without a single measuring tool. He just eyeballed the wheel contact and hit 0.030 every time, three parts in a row. Made me realize how much I still reach for the calipers on stuff I've run a hundred times, anyone else got a guy like that at their place?
Three parts in a row at exactly 0.030? By eye? I have a hard time buying that one. Hitting it close is one thing, but dead on three times without checking is the kind of story that grows a little every time it gets told. Maybe your buddy's lead hand has been running that same part for ten years and his hands just know it, but even then I'd want to see it with a mic on it. Not saying it can't happen, but I've watched a lot of guys swear they were dead on and then watch their face when the calipers come out.
