Was running the wrong spindle speed for 6 years until a old timer walked past my machine and asked if I was trying to burn my part up...

Hate to nitpick but your spindle speed was probably way too high not too low if it was burning up. Low speed with heavy feed can actually save your parts if you're running carbide. Had an old timer set me straight about that on a nasty stainless job once. @rileyjones is right though, that moment when someone walks up and points out your mistake is brutal but you never forget the lesson.
