Warning: my 3 jaw chuck almost wrecked a $400 job in Cleveland

Last Tuesday a guy named Mike at a shop in Cleveland told me he never trusts 3 jaw chucks over 4 inches without indicating the part first, and I laughed it off at the time. Then my repeat run on a 4 inch aluminum flange walked 15 thou on the bore because I got lazy and skipped the indicator, so he was right and my foreman was NOT happy. Anyone else got a habit their coworker warned them about that finally bit them in the ass?}

Read once that even new jaws can hold a part crooked if the scroll is dirty, never skip the indicator.
