Vent: Stop chasing tenths on tool life, your setup is the real problem
Been running a Haas VF-2 for 5 years in a job shop outside Cleveland. Every week some guy comes in bragging about pushing a 1/2 inch end mill 20% harder with some new coating. Then they burn through 3 of them in a shift and blame the material. I watched a new operator run the same part we've made for 2 years and he got chatter on every single pass because his vise jaws were off by 0.002. That's not a tool problem, that's an 8 minute setup fix. I measured 0.0008 runout on his holder and he still argued with me about feed rates. If you're not verifying your workholding and spindle drawbar before you touch the speeds, you're just throwing money at inserts. Has anyone else had to fight a coworker over setup vs. tooling blame? Just get a dial indicator and check everything, it takes 5 minutes you don't have, I swear.
