Overheard a young guy at the tool crib say he'd never seen a paper tape reader.

It made me think about how much we take for granted now, like loading a program from a thumb drive in seconds, when I remember waiting for a whole reel of tape to feed through on an old Bridgeport. Has anyone else had to explain the old ways to a new hire?

Man I gotta disagree a little here. @wells.brooke it's not really about old stuff being funny or bad, it's more about what works for the job. Paper tape was slow and annoying but it got the job done same as a thumb drive does now. The new stuff is just faster, not necessarily better in every way.

Paper tape? That's a new one for me too. My dad used to talk about punch cards and how a single bent corner could ruin your whole day. It's wild to think how fast things change. Explaining floppy disks to my nephew felt like describing ancient history. Makes you wonder what we use now will seem just as crazy in twenty years.

Explaining floppy disks really does feel like ancient history. I used to think my old iPod was cutting edge, but now it looks like a weird brick. Kids will probably laugh at our phones next.
