Just realized I've been overthinking my tool offsets for months

I was cleaning up the break room yesterday and heard two of the senior guys talking about a job they ran. One said, 'I just zero the tool on the part face and call it good, no fancy math.' I've been spending like 15 minutes per setup doing trig in my head to get my Z-offsets perfect from the tool setter. It hit me that I was making it way harder than it needed to be for most of our work. Has anyone else had a moment like that, where you were overcomplicating a basic step?

But what about when you need to hit a tight tolerance? That trig can save a part.

Real life trig saved my ass last week on a 0.001" position callout.

Tight tolerances are no joke. Reminds me of a time we had to drill a hole pattern on a curved surface. The print called out locations from two edges that didn't exist on the part anymore. The whole shop was scratching their heads until someone pulled out a trig book and solved it from the remaining datums. That part got shipped because of an old textbook.
