Heard a guy at the Dayton shop say 'just trust the readout,' and that stuck with me
Was talking with an operator at a shop off I-75 in Dayton about a chatter problem we both run into on 4140 steel. He said a 0.015 depth cut cleaned it up where a 0.010 pass just squealed. I tried it the next morning on a bearing housing job and the finish came off way better than what I was running. Curious what feed and speed numbers you guys lean on for that kind of steel.
That 0.015 working better than 0.010 is the classic case of getting under the worn layer on 4140. The smaller pass just rubs and squeals because the tool is skating on the hard skin instead of cutting under it. For 4140 pre-hard around 28 to 32 HRC I run 350 to 450 SFM with a coated carbide and feed around 0.008 to 0.012 IPR on roughing. The guy at the Dayton shop is half right though, dont blindly trust the readout, verify with a dial indicator after because load meters lie when the tool is chipped.
