Found out coolant mist is way worse for your lungs than I thought, and it came from a safety sheet in the drawer
So I was digging through the filing cabinet at work looking for an old job packet when I pulled out a coolant safety data sheet from 2019, and it had a line about mist exposure limits that stopped me cold. The number for the respirable mist was way lower than the splash and vapor numbers I'd always figured were the real concern, and I'd been running the same machine for about 3 years with the doors open on roughing passes because it kept the chips from piling up. I asked the guy who does our maintenance about it, and he said he swaps the mist collector filters way less than the book calls for, maybe twice a year when it should be way more often. I'm not trying to scare anybody, but I honestly thought the coolant smell was the worst of it, and it turns out the fine mist is the part nobody talks about. I've started keeping the doors shut more and wearing a respirator on the heavy roughing jobs even though it fogs my safety glasses. Curious if any of you have looked at your mist collector schedule lately or if your company just runs them till they clog?
