Bought a $400 optical probe and broke it in 10 minutes

Was sick of edge finding on my old mill so I sprung for a fancy Renishaw style probe, the cheap knockoff from a guy on ebay. Got it set up, ran the calibration cycle twice, everything looked good. Then I forgot to change my tool offset back after a test cut, so it plunged straight into a block of 6061 aluminum on the third part. Probe tip shattered, the stylus bent, and the whole unit started throwing false triggers. $400 gone in less time than it takes to drink a coffee. I spent the rest of the weekend back on the edge finder and honestly it was fine, just way slower. Anyone else destroyed pricey tooling on a stupid mistake like a bad offset? I need to hear I'm not the only one.
