Vent: I tracked my daily driving for a year and hit 9,000 miles, way more than I guessed
I finally added up every trip I took in my Corolla over the last 12 months, and the number came out to 9,000 miles. I honestly guessed I was doing maybe 5,000 or 6,000, so seeing that gap really got me. Most of those miles were short hops around Cincinnati, like 2 mile runs to the store or dropping my kid at practice. That works out to roughly 7,800 pounds of CO2 just from those little drives. I switched two of those weekly trips to biking and started grouping errands into one loop on Saturdays. Curious if anyone else has actually tracked their mileage and been surprised by the real number.
People always guess way low on stuff they do every day, and it isn't just driving. Same thing happens with how much time we spend on our phones, how much we eat, how much we actually sleep. We measure the big stuff and ignore the small stuff, but the small stuff runs our lives. Tracking is the only way to find out the truth because our memory is garbage at math. Those 2 mile trips feel like nothing, but you do them four times a day for years and suddenly it's thousands of pounds of CO2 and a car that wears out early. What got me was realizing most of my miles came from trips I could have walked if I just planned ten minutes better.
