Update: my neighbor in Buffalo got me to start a block compost bin, and I've kept 60 pounds of scraps out of the trash since April
I ran into him at the curb back in April and he mentioned he hadn't put food waste in his trash can in 2 years, which sounded made up, but he showed me his setup the next day. His bin is just 4 pallets screwed together with a lid, and it took me one Saturday to copy it, and now my trash goes out half as often. Does anyone here have a bin that handles winter without freezing solid, because Lake Erie is coming for me in a few months?
Thought the whole compost thing was a waste of time honestly. My dad had a pile in the backyard growing up and it just drew raccoons and smelled bad, so I figured why bother. Then my brother in Rochester talked me into trying it last fall and I was shocked how much lighter my trash bags got. Now I'm the guy bugging people at the curb about scraps. For winter, I wrap my bin in a couple old straw bales and toss in a bag of leaves every few weeks, keeps the middle from turning into a brick. Worth a shot before the lake wind hits.
