Neighbor's solar setup made me rethink my whole retrofit plan

Last Saturday I was out in the backyard in Portland trying to figure out if I should add panels to my south facing roof or just do a heat pump first. My neighbor Randy came over while I was staring at my house with a clipboard. He's had solar for 3 years now and he just said "you're overthinking it, I got my panels for $9,000 after rebates and my power bill went from $180 to $12 a month." That one sentence made me realize I keep comparing payback periods and efficiency ratings but never actually asked anyone who did it. He also mentioned he got a battery backup for outages and that sealed it for me. Has anyone else had one simple convo that pushed them off the fence on a big climate upgrade?
