My town's compost pickup got canceled with 3 days notice, so I started a bucket swap on my block
The city sent out an email saying curbside compost pickup was done because of budget cuts, and the next pickup was in 3 days. I had 12 households on my street, so I knocked on doors and asked if they wanted to dump their scraps in two 5 gallon buckets on my porch instead. The first pickup filled both buckets in 4 days, mostly coffee grounds and banana peels, and one guy dumped in a whole rotisserie chicken carcass which stunk up the porch. I moved the buckets behind the garage and added a lid with holes, and now 9 houses still bring their stuff twice a week. I trade the finished compost back to whoever helped, and my tomato plants have never looked better. Has anyone else done a neighbor setup like this after their city dropped a program?
