My rain barrel setup flooded the garage after a crazy storm in April

I put in a simple rain barrel last fall to water my garden, using a downspout diverter kit from the hardware store. We got that huge storm in April with over 4 inches of rain in one night, and the overflow hose just couldn't handle it. Woke up to find about an inch of water across the whole garage floor, had to use a wet vac for hours. Anyone have a better overflow system they've used that can deal with a real downpour?

My buddy had the same thing happen, his whole basement corner got soaked. He ended up putting in a bigger overflow pipe, like the size for a washing machine drain, and it fixed it. Maybe @mia_park is onto something with adding a second one, but just making the one you have way bigger might do the trick.

Totally agree, my uncle did the same thing with his water heater and it stopped the flooding.

Add a second overflow hose on the other side.
