My neighbor's solar panel advice saved me $600 in 8 months

Last March our neighbor in Austin told me to skip the big solar installers and buy panels directly from a local distributor, then hire an electrician separately to hook them up. It felt risky at the time but the whole setup cost me $4,200 instead of the $8,000 quote I got from a national company. Has anyone else tried piecemeal solar instead of a full package?
