I got roasted for my compost bin setup and had to rethink everything

My neighbor saw me dumping coffee grounds straight into my open pile. She said I was just making a stinky mess, not real compost. Told me I needed a 50/50 mix of greens and browns with proper layering. So I built a three-bin system out of pallets for zero dollars. Now I turn it every 3 days and it actually smells like dirt. Has anyone else had to totally change their composting method after someone called them out?

My first compost setup was basically me throwing kitchen scraps in a bucket and hoping for magic. That neighbor did me a massive favor by roasting me, because my pile smelled like a crime scene mixed with a biology experiment. Now I've got this fancy three-bin system too, and I actually weigh my greens and browns like some kind of compost scientist. Still accidentally forget to turn it sometimes and the guilt eats me alive. Did your neighbor give you any other tips that saved your compost game?

@faithb78 keeping a scale for compost sounds like a lot of extra work for dirt. Is weighing greens and browns really necessary or just something people do to feel like scientists?
