Bought a $40 rain barrel 2 years ago and just realized I had it hooked up backwards.
Watched a city workshop video online and saw the overflow tube was supposed to go on top, not the bottom, so my barrel was basically just a giant mosquito pond the whole time.

Honestly, 2 years of mosquito larvae doesn't sound that catastrophic. I mean yeah it's annoying you had it backwards, but it's just water collection at the end of the day. Rain barrels aren't exactly life support equipment. Unless you were drinking out of it, which nobody should be doing anyway. Tbh I think people overthink these setups when a regular bucket with a screen on top does the same thing for free.

Wait, doesn't the screen clog up pretty quick without any overflow?
