A guy at the Hershey swap meet showed me his desiccant trick and it saved my trunk
I was at the big Hershey swap meet back in October poking around a guy's booth when he noticed me eyeing his old Fiat. He popped the trunk and showed me he keeps two big bags of desiccant in there all winter, plus a bag of charcoal briquettes in a mesh tray. I've had rust popping up in my trunk floor for two seasons now, so I tried it in my barn storage spot and checked last week, bone dry. I used to think a car cover was enough but apparently not for a damp barn in PA. Anyone else running desiccant in their stored cars, and how often do you swap it out?
Two bags of desiccant plus charcoal briquettes seems like overkill for a trunk, unless the car is sitting in a pond. Metal doesn't rust just from air, it needs standing moisture or steady damp, and if your trunk floor was already getting rot then a cover was never the real problem, water was getting in somewhere. You could put a hundred pounds of desiccant in there and it won't stop a leaky seal or a clogged drain. Fix the source and save your money.
