Vent: homeowners who pay extra for a camera scan are wasting money on old brick flues
Did a 1920s house near Dayton last month where the owner dropped $400 on a camera scan after I already ran a brush and mirror through it, and the footage just confirmed what my eyes saw from the roof. I get that cameras look official, but on a straight clay liner a light and mirror tell you the same thing for free, and that money is better spent on a proper cap. Anyone here actually finding camera scans worth it on pre-1950 chimneys, or is it just something we offer because customers expect it?
It reminds me of how people buy extended warranties on a $200 TV, the paperwork just feels safer than trusting your own eyes. On a straight clay liner I'd rather put that $400 toward a stainless cap and a rain collar, that's the part that actually keeps water out of the flue.
