The sock trick that saved my creosote brush from snagging forever
Been fighting with my wire brush catching on the offset in this 100 year old chimney for months. Every pull felt like I was going to lose the whole rod. Tried different brush heads, slower turns, even went back to a chain knocker. Then my helper showed up with a old wool sock over the brush head and duct taped at the collar. Barely caught once the whole sweep, got the buildup out way faster too. Does anyone else have a weird DIY hack like this that sounds dumb but actually works on tricky flues?

That wool sock over the brush head thing is genius. The tape at the collar keeps it from sliding up on the way back too, which is where I always lose mine. I've had good luck wrapping a rag around the brush with a zip tie for the same reason, soft enough to slide past the offset but still scrubs. Gonna try the sock next time though, wool grabs the soot way better than cotton.
