I thought those new flexible camera rods were just a gimmick

A guy at the supply house in Charlotte kept pushing them on me, saying they were great for tight offsets. I figured my old rigid set was fine, but I was wrong. Last Tuesday I had a fireplace with a 22 inch offset that was just impossible. I borrowed his demo unit, a 12 foot Flexi-Snake model, and it went right in. The picture was clear and I could actually see the whole flue liner without fighting it. It saved me at least an hour of frustration. Now I'm thinking about adding one to my truck. Has anyone else made the switch and found a brand that holds up?

My buddy down in Greenville stashed one of those flex rods behind his truck seat for a whole summer and it came out smelling like stale coffee and cigarette butts. The thing still worked fine but every time he pulled it out we'd make jokes about him unrolling a mystery burrito from the floorboard. Might be worth tossing a towel over it if you don't want your truck to smell like a wet dog spa.

So what's the actual build quality like on that Flexi-Snake? I mean, it worked great once, but does it feel like it'll last a full season of getting tossed around the truck bed? That's my big worry with the flexible ones.

The Flexi-Snake feels like a toy from a cereal box, honestly. I used it twice before the little plastic collar where it connects to the hose just gave up. It's now a very expensive, slightly dirty slinky in my garage. For the price, I expected it to survive more than a gentle introduction to my driveway. I wouldn't trust it with a real clog, let alone a season in a truck.
