I just cleaned my 500th chimney this morning
It was a standard job on a brick ranch house over in the west end. I never really kept count before, but my wife started a log for me a few years back. Hitting that number made me think about all the different flues I've seen and how much the tools have changed. My first brush was just a basic wire one on a set of fiberglass rods. Now I'm using a rotary system that cuts the time in half on most jobs. Has anyone else hit a number that made them stop and look back?

Dan's point about it being dirty is exactly right (and Noah's too, honestly). That filth is the proof you actually did something. The first time you sweep a neglected flue and see that black waterfall of creosote come down, it hits you. You're not just cleaning a pipe, you're making a fire safe for a family. That grime is the evidence of what you accomplished.
