Finally accepted I was using too much water on my brush
A master sweep in Philadelphia watched me work for 5 minutes last Tuesday and said "you're soaking the bristles, not wetting them." He showed me his method - just a splash of water on the corner, then spin it dry before it hits the flue. Cut my drying time between brushes by half and I stopped getting ash slurry dripping on carpets. Anyone else get called out for using too much water when they started?

The "ash slurry" part is what got me because that stuff is a nightmare once it gets wet and smears everywhere. Did you notice a big difference in how clean your tools stayed after you cut back on the water, or was it mostly about speed?

Tbh, the tool cleanup difference was actually way bigger than I expected. Once I barely used water, my chisels and planes didn't get that nasty black crust anymore. Speed was nice too but honestly, not having to scrub caked-on wet ash saved me a ton of time.
