My new radiator cover hid a pipe leak for 3 weeks

The rental above me had a slow leak that dripped right behind the cover I put over my cast iron radiator in my Logan Square apartment, and by the time I noticed the bubbling paint it was already soaking the baseboard. Landlord says the drywall patch and repaint is on me since the cover blocked the early warning signs, anyone else dealt with hidden water damage from decorating choices?
