I finally found a mechanic in Pilsen who didn't try to rip me off
Last week my truck started making a weird grinding noise every time I hit the brakes, so I drove it to a shop on 18th Street that a guy at the hardware store recommended. The owner, Sal, came out, listened for 10 seconds, and said it was just a $12 clip that had popped loose near the caliper. He could have told me I needed all new pads and rotors and I would have believed him, but he fixed it in 20 minutes and charged me $30 total. I asked why he didn't just make up a bigger repair, and he said he's been on this block for 22 years and word travels fast if you cheat people. I've lived in Chicago for 9 years and that's the first time a mechanic didn't hand me a $600 estimate for something simple. Anybody got a go-to spot on the south or west side that treats people straight like that?
Curious how you found this Sal guy in the first place, because that hardware store recommendation seems like the real lucky break here. Did the guy at the store give you any warning about him, or was it just a random name drop? And when Sal said word travels fast on the block, did he mean other shops actually lose customers over stuff like that, or is it more that the neighborhood just knows who to trust? I keep wondering if these honest spots stay hidden on purpose or if they're just not on the usual review sites. Feels like the good ones don't need to advertise, which makes them harder to find for the rest of us.
