Quiet mornings in the kitchen made prep a breeze

We were always behind on veg prep. I suggested no talking for the first hour. Everyone focused on their stations. Now we finish early and have time for coffee.

In my cousin's food truck, they also did a quiet first hour but played instrumental music super low. It stopped that tense library vibe some crews get when it's totally silent. They found people still focused on their stations but felt more relaxed, which cut down on mistakes. Your no-talking rule probably gets everyone on the same page fast, which is smart. Just mentioning it because sometimes pure silence can make new hires nervous lol. A little sound can keep the good focus without the pressure.

I mean, the low music thing is interesting, but what happens when someone hates the playlist? Like, instrumental is super broad, from classical to ambient synth stuff. Did they have one person in charge of picking it, or did they rotate? Because I feel like a bad music choice could break focus just as fast as talking.

Wait, the part about new hires getting nervous in total silence actually blew my mind. I never even considered that a totally quiet kitchen could freak someone out, but it makes so much sense. That's a seriously good point that changes how I see the whole quiet vs. music debate.
