PSA: My first real kitchen fire was in a Denver hotel during a wedding rush

Honestly, I grabbed the nearest sheet pan and slammed it over the flaming saute pan, which cut the oxygen and saved the dish. Anyone else have a go-to method for grease fires that doesn't involve a fire extinguisher?

Try keeping a box of baking soda right next to the stove. It smothers small grease fires fast without making a huge mess like flour would. Saved my bacon more than once, lol.

Oh that's such a good point! It's wild how the simplest stuff around the house ends up being the most useful fix. I feel like we all overcomplicate things trying to find a special product when the answer is already in the cabinet. Like using vinegar for cleaning or a potato to take out a broken light bulb. Your baking soda trick totally fits that, just a basic thing that works way better than the fancy option.

Doesn't that just prove how much common sense stuff we ignore these days? @finley_flores28 you're right about people overcomplicating things. I had a fire once and grabbed flour out of instinct, what a mess that was. Baking soda is so much better because it's dry and fine, it really smothers things fast instead of just coating them. Plus if you never use it for fires, it still works for absorbing fridge smells or scrubbing pans. So you're not wasting space with a one-trick item. Keeps the kitchen safer without needing a special extinguisher that costs thirty bucks.
