Had a customer ask for a 'medium rare' salad in Portland last summer
I was working the line at a busy bistro when a guest flagged me down. He pointed at his Caesar and said, 'This lettuce is too cooked, I need it more medium rare.' I had to explain that lettuce doesn't cook like steak, it's just cold and crisp. He looked so confused and asked if we could at least warm it up a little. Has anyone else gotten a request that just made you stop and blink?

That "fixed idea of how food should be" from @gavinhunt is so real. I had a customer once ask for her iced tea to be steamed because she wanted a hot tea but liked our iced tea blend better. She was dead serious and could not understand why we couldn't just heat up the already brewed tea. It's like some folks have a script in their head and the actual food in front of them is just a prop.

Remember a guy who sent back his gazpacho because it was "too chilled for summer." He insisted soup should be warm, even after I explained it was a cold Spanish dish. He asked if we could microwave it for just ten seconds to take the edge off. Some people have a very fixed idea of how food should be, no matter what it actually is.
