Pro tip: The lady at the taqueria on 43rd showed me a cheaper way to order

I used to always get the combo plates at El Ranchito because I thought the individual tacos were a worse deal. One day the cashier just told me to order 3 street tacos instead and it came out to $6.75 instead of $11.50 for basically the same thing. Has anyone else found a trick like that at their local spot?

Ha! So the real pro tip is that the menu is just a trap for people who can't do math... I swear restaurants count on us just assuming the combo is cheaper. I've been getting ripped off for years on "combo deals" that are basically just a tax for people who are too lazy to add up three tacos. Good on that lady for looking out for you though, most cashiers would just let you keep overpaying. Now I'm side-eyeing every menu I see like it owes me money...

Right, have you ever added up a "value menu" and realized you'd save like two bucks just buying stuff separate? I did that at a burger place last month and felt like an absolute clown. I was ordering the combo that came with fries and a drink, but I only wanted the sandwich and some water, so it was literally cheaper to buy two sandwiches than the one with the combo. Now I always do the math in my head before I order, even if I look like a weirdo standing there staring at the board. How many of us are just paying extra for a cardboard box and a napkin?
