Broke my rule about diner breakfasts last Sunday

Always avoided diner breakfasts cause they seemed like a rip for $12 eggs. But I grabbed a $6.50 early bird special at Mel's in Pittsburgh and it was a full plate, real home fries, not the frozen kind. Anyone else find a hidden cheap menu time slot?
