Am I the only one who was paying full price at the deli counter for years before I noticed the markdown bin?
I stop at the grocery store on Route 9 in Poughkeepsie on my way home from work, and for probably two years I walked right past the little shelf by the deli without ever looking at it. Last Tuesday I finally glanced down and saw a pack of sliced turkey and a tub of potato salad with yellow stickers on them, marked down to $2.49 and $1.99 because they were close to their sell-by date. I asked the guy behind the counter how often they do it, and he said it's pretty much every evening around 6, whenever they need to clear out what didn't sell that day. I grabbed both, took them home, and everything was totally fine for another three days in the fridge. The thing that bugs me is I used to pay $7 or $8 for the exact same turkey at the regular case. Now I swing by after work two or three times a week and plan dinners around whatever's on that shelf. Does anyone know if other stores in the area do a set time for this, or is it just kind of random?
Ask the meat or deli guy what time they usually sticker stuff, since most chains follow a set schedule so they don't get caught selling expired food. The 6pm timing you found is pretty common, but weekend mornings can be good too.
