Warning: the salesman in Toledo pushed the extended battery warranty and my math says he was right
When I picked up my used Leaf in Toledo 3 years ago, the finance guy kept pushing the extended battery coverage for $1,900 and I almost walked out because it felt like a hard sell. My brother in law, who has driven electric for 6 years now, said to skip it and just baby the pack with slow charging. So I did that instead. I charged at 120 volts overnight in my garage and kept the car between 30 and 80 percent almost every day. At my 4 year checkup last week the dealer readout showed 91 percent health, which is better than the book says for this age and miles. Then a guy in my neighborhood with the same model, same age, who fast charged twice a week, is down near 78 percent and looking at a $6,000 pack swap. Now I am wondering if the warranty would have even covered normal wear like that anyway. Has anyone actually filed a claim on one of those battery plans and got paid out?
