Last week I tried making a cat meme using only pictures of my cat looking fat and it bombed hard
I thought I had a goldmine. My cat Chonk has this one pose where he sits on the armrest and his belly hangs over like a beanbag. Made 5 memes with him, posted them across 3 groups, got like 12 total upvotes. Meanwhile some basic picture of a gray cat falling off a shelf gets 2k. What am I missing here? Is it the angles or the captions? Anyone else ever put a ton of effort into a meme theme and get nothing back?

ray_king nailed it with the dog yawning thing. That's exactly the trap we all fall into. You get SO convinced your cat's specific pose is the funniest thing ever but the internet just doesn't care. The thing is memes are really about timing and relatability more than quality. A cat falling off a shelf is UNIVERSAL. Everyone's seen a clumsy cat. Your fat cat pose is specific to YOUR cat and YOUR angle. It's like trying to make a meme about your weird neighbor's lawn gnome collection. Even if it's brilliant nobody else has the inside joke. You basically need to pick a standard meme template and just swap in your cat's face. Don't try to reinvent the wheel with new poses or setups. Play by the template rules first then see if people even like looking at your cat.
