Hot take: cropping the cat's ears out of a meme kills the joke, period

My cousin pulled me aside at a family cookout in Mesa last month and said my reaction pics were "too busy" so I should crop the ears to make them cleaner, and I tried it on 3 memes before admitting he was dead wrong. The ears are half the joke, the tilt is what sells the stare. Anyone else got a friend who keeps giving bad meme advice like they're some kind of expert?
