Debated between GIMP and Paint.NET for making cat memes
I spent a whole afternoon trying both before settling on Paint.NET. It handles simple stuff like adding text and swapping backgrounds way faster for a $0 budget. Anyone else find GIMP overkill for this kind of thing?

Settled on Paint.NET myself after my cat photos kept ending up with weird border artifacts in GIMP. Used it to make that classic "woman yelling at cat" meme but with my own grumpy tabby. The layers system is simpler too, just drag and drop without all the extra buttons everywhere.

Paint.NET's layer system is honestly the unsung hero of casual photo editing for cat memes (or any meme, really). I've noticed it handles transparency way better than GIMP for stuff like cutting out your cat's grumpy face - GIMP always leaves these weird halos no matter how careful you are with the eraser tool. Plus you can do multiple undo without the program crashing, which is a huge plus when you're trying to get the text placement just right. Been using it for years and it's the only free editor that doesn't make me want to throw my mouse at the wall.
