Why is everyone stretching carpet without a power stretcher?

I walked into a house in Tacoma yesterday where the crew had already glued down a 12 foot wide roll across a 16 foot room using just knee kickers. The ripple showed up before the glue dried, and the homeowner paid $2,800 for that mess. How do you guys handle installers who refuse to bring the right gear when it costs them nothing but time?
