Question about cutting around a tricky fireplace hearth
I had a job last week in a 1920s house with a huge, uneven stone fireplace hearth. The homeowner wanted wall to wall carpet right up to it. I had to choose between trying to cut the carpet perfectly to the stone's jagged edge or using a metal transition strip to bridge the gap. I went with the transition strip, a heavy duty brass one. It took me about an hour to bend and fit it to the shape, but it covered the uneven cuts and looked intentional. The homeowner loved it because it protects the carpet edge from the rough stone. Honestly, trying to get a perfect cut on that would have taken twice as long and probably still looked messy. Has anyone else used a custom-bent strip for something like this, or do you have a better method for stone edges?
