Overheard a homeowner say carpet is dead, had to bite my tongue

I was measuring a bedroom in Rockford last Tuesday and the wife tells her husband, "why bother, everyone's getting hardwood now." I didn't say anything, but it got me thinking. I've installed over 200 carpets this year alone, and most of those jobs are upstairs bedrooms, stairs, and basements where hard surface just doesn't make sense. Carpet still kills it for sound proofing and warmth, especially in older homes with creaky floors. Also, the guy quoting her $9 per square foot for oak install forgot to mention the subfloor prep costs. Anyone else running into folks who think laminate is the only option for every room?

That "everyone's getting hardwood" line always gets me. Nobody talks about what happens when you have kids or older folks in the house, hardwood turns into an ice rink with socks on, and falls are no joke. Plus, people forget that carpet is actually the quiet choice, a bedroom with hard floors echoes every single footstep and TV sound right into the room below. Hardwood is great for main living spaces, but anyone who thinks it belongs in every single room probably hasn't lived with the noise or the cold mornings. I just wish folks would stop treating it like a status thing instead of a practical choice for each room.
