My brother told me to just pull a carpet pad tight by hand instead of using a knee kicker

I figured he knew what he was talking about since he's been doing floors for 15 years. Ended up with a huge bunch in the middle of a bedroom and had to redo the whole thing from scratch. Has anyone else tried skipping the kicker and regretted it?

Okay I gotta push back on this one. I've been doing floors for about 8 years now and a knee kicker is the difference between a smooth job and a total mess. You can't get consistent tension by just pulling with your arms, especially in the middle of a room where you have no leverage. Your brother might know what he's talking about on some stuff but this is just bad advice.
