Just realized I was wrong about using a regular knife on that weird foam pad

I was doing a job in a condo over in Portland last week, the living room had this super thick, dense foam pad under the old carpet. I tried to cut it with my regular carpet knife and it just bunched up and tore. The homeowner actually had a serrated bread knife in the kitchen and let me try it, and it sliced through like butter. Has anyone else found a better tool for those super dense pads?

That bread knife trick is a lifesaver, I keep one in the truck now just for those pads.

A cheap serrated knife from the thrift store works great for that too.

My dad always kept a bread knife in his toolbox for cutting gaskets and hose. Patriciaellis, your comment made me realize we all have these weird little tool crossovers. I use an old guitar pick as a pry tool for electronics all the time. It's the cheap, simple stuff that gets used for ten different jobs.
