Hot take: I always thought tack strips were just for holding the carpet down
I was reading an old trade manual from the Carpet and Rug Institute and saw they recommend a specific gap size between the strip and the wall. For a standard pad, it said to leave 3/8 of an inch, not right up against it. I tried it on a job in Springfield last week and the stretch felt way smoother. Has anyone else adjusted their gap distance and noticed a difference?

Spotted the same thing with gym equipment placement. People cram machines right against the wall for space, but leaving a real gap for airflow and cleaning makes everything last longer and work better. That manual is right, most things need a little room to breathe and function properly, not just be jammed in tight. Your carpet example just proves the rule applies everywhere.

Yeah, it's like we all forget how to read the second something gets delivered. That manual says "leave space" and we just see a challenge to fit it in the absolute smallest spot possible. Next we'll be shoving our phones in our pockets sideways and wondering why the screens crack.

Mia's right about airflow but gym equipment and carpet tack strips aren't really the same thing - tack strips need that gap specifically for the carpet to hook onto the pins properly, not just for breathing. Different rules for different materials.
