Appreciation post: That time a hotel manager in Tampa showed me his 'no-stretch' method for hallway runners
I mean, I thought he was nuts for not using a power stretcher, but after seeing his seams hold up for 5 years without a single ripple, I had to ask him to show me how he does the tack strip placement.

I once tried that no-stretch method on a hallway in my own house and ended up with a runner that looked like a wrinkled bedsheet after a cat fight. My seams started popping within six months, probably because I used tack strips that were about as sturdy as wet cardboard. Watching a pro like that guy probably made me realize I was basically doing the carpet equivalent of trying to build a deck with a butter knife. Learned the hard way that proper tack strip placement is an art, not a guess.

That part about the tack strips being like wet cardboard is too real. I helped my buddy redo his basement floor last year and he bought the cheapest strips he could find. They were basically made of compressed sawdust. We got the carpet down and two days later it looked like a topographical map. Had to rip it all up and start over. The good strips don't cost that much more but they make all the difference. It's one of those things you only learn by messing it up yourself.
