Vent: three guys in a row asked me to build floating shelves into 1/2 inch drywall with no studs
I keep telling folks that a 12 inch shelf holding books needs at least two studs or a French cleat, but they all say their Pinterest board showed it working with drywall anchors, so now I'm the bad guy for wanting $400 to open up the wall.

So when you tell them two studs minimum, what are they saying back exactly? Like do they think the anchors will just hold forever because some blogger said so? I've seen shelves rip right out of the wall with a full row of books on them, and that's with decent anchors. Somebody's gonna get hurt when that thing comes down on their head at 2am. Do they ever offer to sign something saying they won't blame you when it fails, or do they just want you to eat the cost when it does? That part is what gets me, because you know dang well who they'd call first.
