Stopped by a job site in Portland last week and saw something weird

I was subbing for a guy on a kitchen remodel and noticed all his crown molding was nailed straight into the drywall with no backing. He told me it saves time and he's never had a problem. Has anyone else run into this shortcut on site?

Wait, is this guy trying to win a contest for worst trim job ever? Because I think he just took the gold medal. I've done some lazy stuff myself like using drywall screws for subfloor, but this is next level. You can't just wing it on crown molding and hope nobody notices. I bet his miters look like they were cut with a butter knife. Honestly, the only thing saving him is that Portlanders probably think the gaps are "character.

That trim job looks like I did it myself after three beers and a YouTube tutorial. At least if you squint hard enough the gaps just look like modern art. Portlanders will call it "rustic" and charge double for the tour.
