Serious question, did anyone else used to cut crown flat on the miter saw?

I did that for years in my dad's shop, just laying it flat and using the angle chart on the saw. Then a guy on a job in Asheville last fall showed me how to set it against the fence like it sits on the wall. I tried it his way and the joints just clicked together, no more gaps. It changed everything for me. How do you all handle crown molding cuts?

Flat against the fence is the only way that makes sense now. Why do they even print those charts on the saw?

That's like @brown.reese said, the manual is often the last place you find the right answer.

Wait, isn't the flat method still okay for some saws? I get what @brown.reese is saying about the fence method being better, and it usually is. But if your saw has a really good chart and you cut it flat with the molding upside down, it can still work. The fence method just takes the guesswork out for most people. I still cut some simple stuff flat out of old habit.
