My favorite chisel was a total lie after 10 years of trust

I bought a set of chisels back in 2014 from a lumber yard in Newark, and one of them lost its edge after just an hour of work on oak, so I baked the handle, reset the tang, and realized the steel was soft from the start, but now I'm wondering if anyone else has had a trusted tool fail them this badly or if I just got a lemon.

Ten years and it was soft steel the whole time? That's brutally bad luck, especially since you trusted it through all that oak work. Sounds like the lumber yard passed off a cheap batch with a good name on it, and you paid the price in time and frustration.
