I finally stopped using framing squares for everything after 12 years

Last month I was building a deck in Tacoma and kept fighting with angle cuts on the stringers. A guy on the crew pulled out his speed square and showed me how he marks everything with it, even long rafters. I always thought speed squares were for trim guys or quick marks, not real layout work. After watching him rip through 14 stringers in under an hour without a single bad cut, I went out and bought one the next morning. Has anyone else made the switch late in their career, or am I the only one who was stubborn about it?

Took me 10 years to admit my framing square was basically just a really heavy paperweight... guess old dogs can learn new tricks, just slower.
