I finally started marking my cuts with a knife instead of a pencil, and my joints stopped showing gaps
For 8 years I was a pencil guy, sharpened it every morning, thought I had it all figured out. Then a trim guy named Dale at a job in Boise watched me fit a cabinet and said, "Your line is wider than your saw blade." He was right. I switched to a marking knife about 4 months ago, and my miters on stained oak are so tight now that the finish guys don't even need to touch them. Anyone else make the switch, or do you still keep a pencil behind your ear?

That Dale guy sounds like half the old timers I've worked around, they just drop one line that sticks with you for years. I had a guy tell me something similar about my chisel work once, said I was sharpening to the wrong angle, and it bugged me for a week before I finally tried it his way. Funny how the fix is usually something small you'd never think twice about on your own.
