I finally had a squirrel move into a custom cabinet I built for a client in Asheville
I was doing the final install in their kitchen last week when I heard scratching, and a little gray head popped out of the gap for the range hood duct. I had to carefully take the whole upper section apart outside to let him go, and now I always check for wildlife before sealing anything up. Has anyone else had an animal set up shop in their work before it even left the job site?

Man, that's wild. I used to just slap things together and call it good, but a buddy had a bird nest in a vent hood once. Now I'm paranoid and check every single cavity before closing it up.

My friend Tim found a whole family of mice living in his kitchen island after a remodel. They had chewed through the wiring harness for the new under-cabinet lights. He had to pull out the entire countertop again. Now he jokes about doing a final vermin check before signing off on any project.

...and that's exactly why I always tack on a "critter check" before I close up any wall or cavity now. I had a similar nightmare with a crawl space remodel where a raccoon had been nesting in the insulation right where I was about to put the subfloor down. Now I shine a bright flashlight into every nook and cranny, and I even leave those cheap ultrasonic repellent plugs running for a week before I seal anything up. Saves a lot of headaches and rework later, trust me.
