Found out my miter saw was 2 degrees off after 4 years of gaps
I built a set of kitchen cabinets last week and every outside corner had a hairline gap I kept blaming on the wood. My buddy swung by with his digital angle finder and the saw was sitting at 43.5 instead of 45, which means every 45 degree cut I've made since 2020 has been off. How often do you guys check your saw detents, and is a cheap angle finder good enough or do I need to spring for a real one?
Check the blade itself too, because a warped or dirty blade can throw your cuts off a half degree or so even if the detent is dead on. Run a sharpie mark on a scrap and spin the blade by hand to see if the line wobbles. A cheap angle finder gets you close enough for cabinets, just zero it on the table first so you're not chasing your own error.
